TIP SERIES: Part 1 "What Labels Want"

Record companies are in business to do one thing. “Sell Records”

First and foremost: Record companies are looking for artists with
talent and ability, capable of making records that will appeal to themass record-buying public, an artist who will sell millions of records
on a consistent basis. However, talent alone is not enough. A&R
departments hear hundreds of good CD’s by extremely talented artists
on a regular basis. They’re looking for a unique voice or distinct
sound with a signature, one that will be recognized time and time
again on the radio after only hearing the first few bars of an artist’s
newest release.

When you’re asking an A&R guy and executive upper level folks at
a major label to sign you, you’re basically asking them for a minimum
of $500,000. - $1,000,000. and their job, cause if they sign you, and you
don’t fly, that’s what they stand to lose.
